House Of St Barnabas Offers Spectacular Setting For Emerging Art

House Of St Barnabas

The House of St Barnabas, Soho London, has launched their permanent art collection `The Collective’ at their new, not-for-profit members’ club, which opened on 8 November. The concept behind this new addition to the West End scene, marks an innovative step forward for all private members’ clubs. It offers a conscious clientele which mixes well with the creative industries. The club also presents a great watering hole situated in a beautiful and authentic Georgian setting with every original feature under the sun intact. This includes Adams fireplaces and plasterwork and its own private chapel in case you want to repent.

The Collective at the club at The House of St Barnabas also showcases the work of emerging and established artists in a programme of visual art, conceived to inspire and uplift the members and staff of this ground-breaking club. In a spirit of collaboration and connectivity, artists, galleries and curators will either permanently donate or loan works to the club for a period of three months. The club will also host a project space for photographic projects that engage with those affected by homelessness, offering workshops and exhibiting their own images. The Collective encapsulates the essence of The House of St Barnabas, in its ethos of collaboration and its commitment to nurturing talent.

The permanent collection includes donations from celebrated artists such as Martin Creed, as well as fellow founding members Hew Locke and Rankin, and artists including Tracey Emin, Jeremy Deller, Mark Titchner, Yinka Shonibare MBE, Chris Levine, Djordji Ozbolt, Neil Gall, Kevin Francis Gray, Gordon Cheung, Jamie Shovlin, Simon English and Julie Verhoeven. The club at the House of St Barnabas recently announced that Hew Locke is consigning an installation of nine shields, that have previously appeared at ArtSway New York and Venice, but have not been seen before in London.

The Collective boasts an impressive programme of burgeoning talent including Liane Lang, Alexander Massouras, Yun Kyung Jeong, Mat Chivers, Kate McGwire, Ann-Marie James,Holly Stevenson and Jodie Carey.

The programme includes, James Putnam who is curating a solo project, Into the Void by Whitney McVeigh. Concerned with reinvention, her ink work embodies a sense of time and human imprint exploring the psychological and physical aspects that underlie us as humans. McVeigh is currently exhibiting Hunting Song at the Gervasuti Foundation, 55th Venice Biennale.

Curator Will Lunn will present Paradise, Heel! an exhibition of work by Blue Curry, Dexter Dymoke and Amy Stephens that reflects on the peculiar implications of mental escape and the exotic associated with the quintessentially British concept of the ‘Garden Room’, in which it is housed.

There will also be works on loan from private collectors, including works by Jean-Michel Basquiat, Roy Lichtenstein and Keith Haring. The club at the House of St Barnabas is delighted to be collaborating with galleries including Riflemaker; Pertwee, Anderson and Gold: Sumarria Lunn; Galerie Simpson; Pace Gallery and Hales Gallery. The House of Fairy Tales will be curating a wall in the club, featuring work from such artists as Sir Peter Blake, Mat Collishaw, Cornelia Parker and Paula Rego. Some of the pieces will be for sale and a percentage of all art sales are donated to the charity towards its work.

The Collective has been curated by Katie Heller of Patch London, who has worked at Frieze London and The Whitechapel Gallery, London and who has specialist knowledge of emerging British contemporary art.
