Banksy has unveiled a new collateral event in Venice for the Biennale. It was confirmed via his Instagram account on Wednesday. The elusive Street Artist has created another market stall installation similar to the one he set up in New York during his residency in 2013.

This time the Bristol-born artist has unveiled a tourist style stand consisting of gilt-framed paintings in the style of Canaletto. They depict a classic Venetian scene with a cruise ship overshadowing the background. The message, Venice is sinking why on earth would you allow cruise ships into the Grand Canel to aggravate the problem.
A video documenting the Banksy incident shows an actor setting up the stall near St Mark’s Square and then being told by the police that as he doesn’t have a license to sell his work he is asked to pack up and leave.
A few weeks ago, the artist produced another mural of a young refugee girl holding a pink flare. It was in response to the installation by the controversial Swiss-Icelandic artist Christoph Büchel who presented the actual fishing ship ‘Barca Nostra’, which sank off the Libyan coast killing over 1,000 migrants who were locked in the below deck cabin of the boat. The episode was the worst shipping disaster in Europe since the Second World War. The display of this boat at an arts festival has backfired and created a storm on Twitter.
The Biennale’s artistic director, Ralph Rugoff told John Snow on Channel 4 news: “It’s one thing to see an image in a newspaper or on television, but when you confront the physical thing, you have a whole other group of sensations. You feel it differently; you’re processing the information in a different way. Hopefully, that leads you to think differently.”
Banksy is an anonymous graffiti artist from Bristol, who uses subversive epigrams and dark humour to provide political and social commentary on streets, walls, and bridges of cities throughout the world. Banksy’s work grew out of the Bristol underground scene, which involved collaborations between artists and musicians.
