Art Basel Miami Beach has released its exhibitor list for the 2024 edition, promising an exciting and vibrant art fair this December in Miami. According to Art Basel, this year’s event will feature 283 galleries, an increase from last year’s 277, with 32 new participants—the highest number of newcomers since 2008.
Among the first-time exhibitors are Jakarta’s ROH Gallery, marking the debut of an Indonesian gallery at the fair, Leeahn Gallery from Seoul and Daegu in South Korea, Pearl Lam Galleries from Hong Kong and Shanghai, and Gallery Wendi Norris from San Francisco. This influx of new galleries indicates the fair’s commitment to broadening its scope and inclusivity.
However, adding new talent means some 2023 exhibitors will not return this year. Notable absences include Galerie Eva Presenhuber. Additionally, several recently closed galleries, such as Cheim and Read, Simone Subal Gallery, Mitchell-Innes and Nash, and The Vitrine Gallery, are all not participating.
This edition will be the first to be headed up by Bridget Finn, who was appointed director of Art Basel’s US show in July last year. Finn was, until recently, a partner of the Detroit gallery Reyes Finn. She will bring her experience as a dealer and former Art Basel exhibitor to improve the fair experience. The fair will also introduce smaller stands that will be cheaper than the main galleries.
Bridget Finn, the director of Art Basel Miami Beach, highlighted the importance of fostering diversity in the fair. “Ensuring a more equitable path to participation for small and mid-sized galleries in the main sector of the show was essential,” Finn said. “The extraordinary number of newcomers this year reflects our commitment to this goal.”
The fair will occur at the Miami Beach Convention Center from December 6 to December 8, with a VIP opening on December 5. This year’s event will occur amid financial challenges following Florida Governor Ron DeSantis’s veto of over $32 million in arts and culture grants from next year’s budget, which may influence the overall mood.
The 2024 edition will also feature special sections: Nova, showcasing younger galleries with work from the past three years; Positions, offering solo presentations by emerging galleries; and Survey, dedicated to curated projects of works created before 2000.
Art Basel Miami Beach 2024 is set to be a dynamic event, celebrating contemporary art with a blend of returning favourites and fresh new voices, solidifying its reputation as a leading global art fair.
