The disproportionately low number of black artists represented in the 2016 Oscar nominations was debated by the film industry and public alike. This prompted us to think about compiling a list of the top 10 internationally recognised Black visual artists. Narrowing the list was not difficult and there were several deserving names that didn’t make it onto the final 10. Last year’s Venice Biennale had a strong presence for people of colour, including the top award, the coveted Golden Lion going to a prominent African artist. Here is our list, the first of many celebrating diversity in the visual arts!
