Donald Trump Drawing Sells For £22,000 At Auction In LA

Donald Trump Drawing Sells At Auction For $30,000

Is Donald Trump a better artist than George W Bush? This is a question on many peoples lips this morning, now that an original drawing by the US President Donald J Trump, depicting the Manhattan skyline with Trump Tower smack in the middle has gone under the hammer in Los Angeles, achieving a staggering $29,184 (£22,000). This follows a market trend of politician’s artwork including that of Sir Winston Churchill, George W Bush and Adolf Hitler selling for five figure sums.

The drawing had received five times more interest than the firm expected

It was created for a charity auction in 2005 and consigned to the LA-based Nate D Sanders auction house by the original buyer.  Michael Kirk the auctioneer said, the drawing had received five times more interest than the firm expected. “It’s attracted interest from not just Trump followers, but also presidential memorabilia collectors,” he said. There were 11 bids for the drawing, starting at $9,000. In the past, Trump memorabilia has sold including a Ferrari, a set of golf clubs, and a bottle of whiskey signed by him.

The work was created by the president for a charity auction promoting worldwide literacy in 2005. The charity auction also included works by fellow Republican John McCain, and former Democrat Senator Joseph Lieberman, as well as actors Charlize Theron and Benicio Del Toro.

The cartoon like scribble was drawn on a large envelope and according to Michael Kirk of Nate D. Sanders auctioneers, there are only two other known variants of the drawing. The variants “feature the same skyline with slight variations,” making it an extremely rare example of presidential memorabilia. On Thursday night, there were 11 bids for the drawing, starting at $9,000.

“It’s a piece of art from a U.S. President, so it’s attracted interest from not just Trump followers, but also presidential memorabilia collectors,” Kirk stated. “ Trump, who has tried and failed to destroy the National Endowment for the Arts has been heavily criticised by the art establishment.

The auction house description of the lot: Donald Trump hand-drawn and signed sketch of the New York City skyline, with Trump Tower at its center. Composed and signed ”Donald J Trump” in gold marker, artwork measures 11.5” x 9”, nicely matted against gold and framed to 18.5” x 16”. Light smudge and abrasion to right side, otherwise near fine condition. Originally drawn by Trump for a charity event, and very rare, with only a handful of such drawings known.
