Fiac Paris Leading Contemporary Art Fair Kicks Off

Foire Internationale d’Art Contemporain

FIAC the leading Paris contemporary art event launches tonight in Paris. The fair combines pieces by emerging names with blue chip works by Picasso and other 20th-century best-sellers. Foire Internationale d’Art Contemporain finally came into its own in the last few years attracting many of the important international galleries like Gagosian, David Zwirner, White Cube and Lisson.  Although the fair has been a regular date on the art calendar since 1974 the fair has had a new lease of life provided by Frieze Art Fair’s conveniently scheduled date just before the fair’s slot. Many of the better international galleries have found it is cost effective to stand at both venues because of the close proximity between London and Paris.

With the renovation of the Grand Palais’s historic Salon d’Honneur complete, fiac now boasts 181 stands, 13 more than last year. More than 40 dealers are new to the fair. Director Jennifer Flay has opened the fair to cutting edge galleries like Glasgow’s Mary Mary, exhibiting Lili Reynaud-Dewar and Alexis MargueriteTeplin. Berlin also has a large  presence with 20 galleries, including newcomers Kamm, Eigen+Art, and Peres Projects.

The director of FIAC, Jennifer Flay, says: “We’ve got more conceptual works on display this year than ever before. The fair is at its core—and as its raison d’être is—a market event. Obviously that is our primary function. But around that it is important for us to address types of artistic production that fall outside or have fallen outside traditional market practices.”
