Photo Miami Cancelled For 2010

Art Basel Miami

One of the most popular art shows during Art Basel Miami has been cancelled this year, a month shy of their press preview, on November 30. Photo Miami 2010, which was due to take place in the first week of December, has been cancelled the organiser’s press representatives have announced. Last year, in spite of reports that the fair was expanding. Photo Miami 2009 set up shop in a recently vacated Circuit City storefront on North Miami Ave in Miami’s midtown. Despite being cleverly spun as strategically positioned on the main thoroughfare for all of the major satellite fairs during ABMB, as well as the Rubell Family Collection and the new warehouse for the Rosa and Carlos de la Cruz Collection, the location appeared to be a definite step down from 2008 when the fair occupied a large tent next door to SCOPE MIAMI and Art Miami.Steve Eshelman, Managing Partner, and Charles Guice, Photo Miami’s Managing Director stated “Fotomarkt (the company behind the event) was unsuccessful in its bid to secure additional financing for the Fair. While the company had explored financing from other sources, it could not secure adequate funding within the time frame requisite for producing a fair of the quality that the exhibitors, partners and visitors had come to expect. Photo MIAMI, the acclaimed contemporary international fair of photo-based art, video, and new media in 2009 had international galleries from Canada, China, Germany, Italy, Spain, Puerto Rico, the United Kingdom and the U.S. Coinciding with Art Basel Miami Beach, the fair, paired innovative thinking, with premiere groups of returning exhibitors, and a number of first-time participants.

We are surprised by this decision but in light of the recession, which is still manifesting itself, it is likely that there just weren’t enough paying dealers to fill the venue.
