Sony World Photography Award Won By Central Saint Martins Student

Sony World Photography Award

A Central Saint Martins student, Scarlett Evans, aged 22, has beaten off competition, including some of the most innovative young photographers worldwide, in the 2014 Sony World Photography Awards Student Focus catagory. Student Focus is one of the largest international programmes for photography students.  Involving 230 educational institutions worldwide, its aim is to support and inspire the future generation of photographers.

It provides a professional network of contacts and offers a variety of competitions, tutorials and opportunities to help talented emerging photographers to turn professional.  Many of previous finalists of the Student Focus competition are now working regularly in the photography industry.

Scarlett Evans, aged 22 from Spitalfields, London is in her third year of BA Graphic Design at Central Saint Martins, London. She secured his place as one of the ten finalists from around the world with an image titled “#ThenewNewTestament”.  The image was shot in response to a brief asking for a single image showing “Tomorrow’s News”.

Talking about the winning photograph Evans comments: “I took the winning image outside a church in Nashville, Tennessee, whilst travelling the South last spring. It seemed like such an incongruous juxtaposition of old and new faiths. The irony of it just made me laugh”

She continues: “It’s really exciting to have been selected as a Student Focus finalist. It was really not something I was expecting! I am especially pleased to have won the camera as mine is currently broken, so it couldn’t have come at a better time.

I have always had an interest in photography. This most likely stemmed from my mother’s compulsive capturing of every waking minute on camera. This trait I have most definitely inherited. Time is transient, and people, places, objects changeable. I take photographs in order to capture individual moments that won’t be there tomorrow.”

As a finalist Evans has won the latest full frame camera from Sony – the α7  – which she must now use to fulfil the second brief of the competition: shoot a series of images under the title “Self-portraits”.   One winning series will be chosen by the judges from this work.

As the other part of their prize, all ten finalists, including Evans, will be brought to London with their tutor to attend the 2014 Sony World Photography Awards gala ceremony in London on 30 April.

At the ceremony the finalists will discover the recipient of the 2014 Student Focus Photographer of the Year title and the grand prize of €35,000 worth of Sony photographic equipment for their university.

In addition, each finalist will see their “Self-portraits” series shown as part of the 2014 Sony World Photography Awards Exhibition at Somerset House, London from 1-18 May and have their work published in the 2014 edition of the annual Sony World Photography Awards book.

Talking about his student’s success, Gary Wallis, Senior Lecturer & Subject leader in Photography for the Graphic Communication Design Programme at Central Saint Martins comments: “Photography is a large aspect of the Graphic Design Degree course at Central Saint martins. We work with the students throughout the course setting them pure photographic brief as well as working with them for photographic solutions to design, illustration, moving image and advertising briefs. The diverse nature of our course and students from across the world produces very interesting approaches and solutions in photography.

A large number of our final year students, including Scarlet, specialise in photography for their final major self-initiated projects for their degree. The best of this work is shown in a separate photographic exhibition at out degree show. Some our students have gone to very successful diverse careers in photography including Portraiture, Fashion, Reportage, Fine art amongst others becoming leaders in their fields and winning awards.”
