The International Folkwang Prize 2015 Goes To Hans Ulrich Obrist

The 2015 International Folkwang Prize has been awarded to famed curator Hans Ulrich Obrist. The prize can be added to Obrist’s growing list of distinctions after the Folkwang Museum announced him as the winner of the award in a press release. Ulrich Obrist is the co-director of London’s Serpentine Gallery and is widely considered as one of the most influential contemporary art curators in the world.

The curator has been co-director of the Serpentine Gallery since 2006. As part of the 2012 Ruhrtriennale, Obrist curated an internationally acclaimed exhibition of performance art titled ‘Twelve Rooms’ for Museum Folkwang.

Dr. Ulrich Blank, Chair of the Folkwang-Museumsverein, explained the jury’s decision by declaring: ‘At the heart of Obrist’s curatorial practice is his commitment to work closely with artists and raise the public profile of current art production, just as Osthaus did before him. He is as much a brilliant curator as a quiet and critical observer.’ The official award ceremony will take place on 2 November
2015.’

Worth €25,000, the International Folkwang Prize is awarded each year by the Folkwang Museum to individuals and institutions that have made a special contribution to the promotion and dissemination of art to the general public, in a manner worthy of the memory of Museum Folkwang founder Karl Ernst Osthaus (1874–1921).

The award was launched in autumn 2010 and was first awarded to Neil MacGregor, director of the British Museum. In October 2013 it was awarded to the patron of the arts and business owner Reinhold Würth.
