New York and London gallery Skarstedt can now count among its early sales Andy Warhol’s 1984 remix of Edvard Munch’s The Scream The work sold to a private collector for around £3.4 million, at Frieze Masters 2014.
This is a sum pales in comparison to the £74 million Leon Black paid for Munch’s own version of The Scream; which was at Sotheby’s back in 2012. That particular set the record for the most expensive artwork ever sold at auction.
In an exhibition at New York’s Scandinavia House last year titled “MUNCH | WARHOL and the Multiple Image; ”Warhol’s take on The Scream was featured, alongside the Pop artist’s other versions of works by Munch which include Madonna and a self-portrait.
This is the third edition of Frieze Masters, the fair for art from ancient to modern, takes place on Gloucester Green in London’s Regent’s Park from 15–19 October 2014 and is sponsored by Deutsche Bank for the third consecutive year. Frieze Masters was designed by New York-based Selldorf Architects, and benefits from a contemporary, elegant environment where ancient and modern art can be shown side by side. Coinciding with and within walking distance of Frieze London, together the two fairs encourage a crossover between audiences of contemporary and historical art.
Frieze Masters is a presentation of 127 of the world’s leading galleries, with 107 participants in the main section and 20 in the Spotlight section of the fair which is dedicated to solo presentations of artists from the twentieth century. Skarstedt is one of the galleries presented.
