Kettle’s Yard in Cambridge reopens this week after a two-year redevelopment programme by Jamie Fobert Architects which includes major new exhibition galleries, generous education spaces and a cafe. Fobert is the new favourite architect of the museum world. Last year saw his completion of the extension at Tate St Ives, and he has just been appointed to undertake the £35.5m transformation of the National Portrait Gallery.

From Vapor to Gasoline White Cube

Society Running on Empty at White Cube by Edward Lucie-Smith

From the Vapor of Gasoline, the odd title of the new mixed exhibition at White Cube Mason’s Yard comes from a slogan Jean-Michel Basquiat scrawled across one of his paintings. The phrase, so the exhibition list tells one ‘conjures [up] a society running on empty’. That may well be so, but one has to remember that the painting concerned was produced in 1985, more than thirty years ago, at the very height of Basquiat’s success in the New York art world, then much closer to being globally dominant than it is now.

Lucio Fontana Environment Installations To Be Reconstructed In Milan

Visitors to a major exhibition which will be staged at Pirelli Hangar Bicocca in Milan this autumn will be able to walk through several of Lucio Fontana’s celebrated ‘environments’ featuring different forms and colours which unfold through rooms, corridors, glass walls and labyrinthine paths. The show, opening on 20 September 2017, has been developed in collaboration with Fondazione Lucio Fontana.

Adam Clayton Bassist in the Rock band U2 has put a rare Jean-Michel Basquiat Drawing up for auction at Christie’s. The self-portrait goes under the hammer next month, after residing for 25 years in his private collection. The pop star bought the artwork in 1990 when they were recording their album Achtung Baby in New York.
