London, June 2024 – KKWEER Arts is set to unveil ‘Ultraviolet,’ a compelling group exhibition that delves into the nuanced world of coded language, symbols, and gestures within queer communities. The show will run from July 4 to July 14, 2024, at 15 Bateman Street, London.

The exhibition includes works from some of the most prominent names in Queer Art, featuring new pieces by the renowned Maggi Hambling alongside a mix of fresh and existing works by artists such as Ajamu X, Lulu Bennett, Kudzanai-Violet Hwami, Olivia Sterling, Shadi Al-Atallah, Elsa Rouy, Zach Toppin, Sarah Jane Moon, Sadie Lee, Dale Lewis, Ebun Sodipo, Sola Olulode, Eva Dixon, Whiskey Chow, Sarah-Joy Ford, SHARP, and Kevin Kane, with more artists to be announced.

Curated by Gemma Rolls-Bentley and Ell Pennick, ‘Ultraviolet’ explores the rich history and evolution of queer visual coding. Rolls-Bentley, a seasoned advocate for diversity in contemporary art, and Pennick, the young founder of Guts Gallery, have brought together a powerful lineup of artists to highlight the vibrant tapestry of queer identity.

The exhibition examines how coded expressions within queer communities serve as tools of resistance, connection, and self-affirmation. Through various mediums, the artworks reveal how subtle subversions and bold defiance have empowered individuals and fostered community bonds.

Kevin Kane, founder of KKWEER Arts, expressed enthusiasm for the exhibition, stating, “We are thrilled to highlight the exceptional talents of these artists, furthering our dedication to uplifting and celebrating LGBTQIA+ creators. In a world increasingly divided, it’s imperative that we not only advocate for queer visibility but also emphasize the importance of queer joy. Our exhibition serves as a beacon of hope, offering a space where diverse voices can unite, fostering understanding and acceptance.”

Curators Rolls-Bentley and Pennick added, “We are excited to bring our curatorial voices together to further KKWEER Arts’ mission to support LGBTQIA+ artists. By exploring the intricate nuances of queer visual coding, ‘Ultraviolet’ not only pays homage to the past but also ignites vital conversations about the present and future of LGBTQIA+ expression. Our exhibition champions creativity, community, and resilience in the face of adversity.”

The exhibition kicks off with a press view on July 4, 2024, at 5:00 PM, followed by an opening night featuring performances, with details to be announced. Interested attendees are encouraged to RSVP to ultraviolet@artin.agency
