SP-ARTE 2013: International Galleries Presence Strengthen Brazil Art Market

SP-Arte

The SP-Arte fair opened in São Paulo on the 4 April and on day 3 of this truly international event, many interesting galleries, especially the North American and European contributors, impacted on the quality of the fair. Gagosian with Takashi Murakami and Roy Lichtenstein, presented an outstanding selection of first rate work. The fair in general is having a positive influence on the local art scene, placing Latin America as a central contender in the global art market. The presence of international galleries has been a welcome addition to SP-Arte. Despite the high rates to import art into the country, the galleries showed enthusiasm bringing top quality works and artists to this edition of the fair.

“This is now our third event in Brazil and the second in SP-Arte in Brazil, We are pleased with how our gallery has been received in this country. The first group exhibition in the gallery is highlighting an international selection of artists which includes the Brazilian artist Daniel Senise” stated; Daniela Gareh, director of sales at White Cube.

The exhibitors on the second floor in market, showcase global galleries such as White Cube, Gagosian and others from London such as, Spruth Magers and Max Wigram Gallery. All have presented some interesting artists. In the same area at the fair, some of the best know Brazilian galleries such as Luiza Strina, Luciana Brito and Nara Roesler have presented their best artists with a special mention to Brígida Baltar and her selected work “Refuge”. “The fair is impressive, the conections with new collectors and artists is  great” said Greg Lulay, director of the David Zwirner gallery.

The Swedish Photography presented from a gallery that is based in Berlin was notable as is in SP-Arte in their second year bringing together many young and important emerging artists “We would like to show Brazilians important references from the Swedish photographers like Inka Lindergard and Niclas Holmström, and we are very enthusiastic with the public response” say Dorotheé the project director. Other interesting participation is from kaikai kiki gallery and their upcoming artist Matthew Monahan, an American who will participate in this year in Venice Biennal.

The fair still open today (Sunday 7 April )  and there are many other features to see from galleries based in Brazil, like upcoming artist Sandra Cinto with her impressive drawing works.
