“The work of memory collapses time.”
Walter Benjamin

A language in art has developed from the latter part of the twentieth century into the twenty-first century, which is influenced by globalisation and the economic, political and cultural changes that have taken place and continue to do so. This has been seen as another stage of Modernism by some critics and an ‘alter modern’ culture. Today’s art originates from a broad and complex context with multiple formats of expression and ways of working.

Benge, Surti and Parker are all aware of the imagery and conceits of art history, the imagery of advertising and signage. To some extent, they work towards subverting these canons. In “The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction” (1935), Walter Benjamin addresses the political, social, and cultural functions of art in a capitalist society.  Benge, Surti and Parker are continuing with this in mind, as they create and translate ideas within their practice and are quite specific to the time we are living through.
