Lilian Holt (1898-1983) Retrospective In Charcoal And Oil

Lilian Holt,Brooke-Walder Gallery

The Brooke-Walder Gallery presents the first solo show of Lilian Holt’s artwork in half a century. It features works lent by the Ben Uri Museum and private collections from around the country dating from 1947-1970, including a painting of her daughter Dinora Mendelson on her wedding day. Alongside the exhibition, the Brooke-Walder Gallery will collaborate with Emily Fuggle, a Collaborative Doctoral Award PhD Researcher, to print a long-form essay on Lilian Holt.

Lilian Holt studied at the Putney Art School and was a founding member of the Borough Group, a collective of painters influenced by her husband, David Bomberg (1890-1957)

‘Spirit in the mass’ has emphasised the group’s philosophy since the Third Exhibition of the Borough Group and can be seen in all the work in the exhibition.

Having accompanied her first husband Jacob Mendelson on his business engagements with artists in the late 20’s, Holt refined her ability to critically assess and inform art production enabling her to think and paint as both an artist and a gallerist.
