Event Details

The iconic Freemasons’ Hall in Covent Garden, London is throwing open its doors to the public on Saturday 24th June 2017 – Freemasonry’s official 300th anniversary – for a major new exhibition ‘Rough to Smooth: Art inspired by Freemasonry – past, present and future’ of exciting new works by its first ever Artist in Residence as part of its Open Day.

Artist Jacques Viljoen has been given unprecedented access to objects and spaces throughout the nine-floor Grade 2* listed Freemasons’ Hall – one of the finest Art Deco buildings in England.

From paintings on a series of unusual books used in Masonic ceremonies to capturing what goes on in the Lodge rooms, regalia and museum objects, the artist hopes to bring Freemasonry to life via another medium and highlight its relevance in society today

Nine guest artists have also been invited to work alongside Jacques, including renowned Norwegian oil painter Henrik Uldalen, curator of Paint Guide. The artists have diverse specialisms, ranging from oil painting to mixed media and photography.
