Bernard Jacobson Gallery presents an exhibition of still lifes by British artist William Tillyer. The exhibition examines the development of the still life throughout the course of Tillyer’s career and unfolds through a variety of media, including watercolours, prints, oils, acrylics, and the artist’s signature wire mesh, which he incorporated as early as the 1970s.
In Tillyer’s still lifes that feature wire mesh, a sense of energy fills his surfaces as he uses vividly coloured forms to disrupt the order of geometric grids. The wire mesh provides the support for both abstract and clearly defined subject matter. It is precisely this tension between abstraction and figuration that characterises Tillyer’s approach to still lifes.
