Wind back fifty years, and there was a definite hierarchy in which painting and sculpture were at the top, while textiles were reduced in importance by being categorised as both a craft and a female activity. And the two didn’t mix much. Times have changed: an artist might as easily work in textiles as in any other medium and be taken seriously, or might add a textile element to more traditional media. This show explores the connecting threads between media, whether actual or depicted, in the work of nine artists working across the categories.

Over the same fifty years, that matter of self-identity – be it in race, sexuality or gender – has become increasingly fluid. It seems appropriate that the categorisation of art has made a parallel journey. Both the media used and the approaches to using them have become sufficiently fluid that one might see threads connecting them all.
