The 2024 Art Basel fair in Miami Beach, the first under new director Bridget Finn, closed on Sunday after welcoming more than 75,000 visitors: private collectors, museum directors, and art enthusiasts worldwide. In total, 286 galleries from 38 countries—two-thirds of which were based in the Americas—made for a fair that is solidly positioned as a key barometer of the global art market.
The fair, held in Miami Beach, featured an eclectic mix of works ranging from contemporary art and 20th-century masters to the latest emerging talents, with dealers reporting strong sales across the board. Private collectors and major public institutions made significant acquisitions, further underlining Art Basel as a platform for premier art transactions. Works by established figures such as Pablo Picasso, Robert Rauschenberg, Keith Haring, and Gerhard Richter were placed alongside contemporary artists like Wangechi Mutu, Kara Walker, Cecily Brown, and Marlon Mullen.
Finn’s first edition also had a strong institutional presence, with over 230 museums and foundations in attendance, including the Tate, MoMA, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and the Fondation Beyeler. These institutions signalled a continued interest in expanding their collections through high-profile acquisitions facilitated by the fair.
Art Basel’s curated sectors- Kabnett, Meridians, Nova, Positions, and Survey- were highly praised for spotlighting diversified perspectives and the voices of those underrepresented in the art world. The fair was also commended for sales fostering critical discourse with immersive installations that transcended the typical format of fairs.
Finn called the event “a testament to the enduring dynamism of the Americas in the global art ecosystem.” Dealers similarly praised the fair’s ability to draw a diverse range of patrons and foster a fertile business environment.
As the art world continues to recalibrate in a post-pandemic context, Art Basel Miami Beach 2024 proved resilient and agile, cementing its stature as an indispensable fixture on the international calendar.
