Contemporary Art Influencer Jerry Gogosian Found Dead in São Paulo

Hilde Lynn Helphenstein Jerry Gogosian

Hilde Lynn Helphenstein, the artist and commentator who built one of the art world’s most recognisable satirical personas under the name Jerry Gogosian, was found dead on 1 June in her room at the Rosewood Hotel in São Paulo. She was 40. Brazilian television network Globo reported that she was discovered beside an empty vodka bottle, a broken glass and unidentified pills. A man who identified himself as her plastic surgeon told Globo that he had gone to her room after she stopped answering her phone. He said she had been in Brazil for three weeks following a cosmetic procedure, and that the days before her death, he had taken her to an emergency care unit after a possible overdose. Police registered the death as suspicious and have requested further tests. The hotel confirmed her death in a statement, saying it had provided full cooperation with the relevant authorities.

Helphenstein created the Jerry Gogosian Instagram account as a vehicle for art-world satire, splicing art critic Jerry Saltz with megadealer Larry Gagosian in a joke that had an immediate impact. The account, which attracted around 145,000 followers, parodied the vanities, hierarchies and absurdities of the contemporary art market with a mixture of insider knowledge and genuine wit. For a certain generation of art-world observers, it became essential reading, the kind of account that circulated among collectors, gallerists and critics as a guilty pleasure, something that said out loud what people only thought in private.

In recent years, she seemed to be moving away from the project. In February 2024, she signed with United Talent Agency’s Fine Arts division, a move suggesting ambitions beyond her Instagram persona. UTA’s Fine Arts division closed in September of that year, and it remained unclear whether she continued as a client. Last June, she announced on Instagram that she planned to wind down the account, saying she had outgrown it. The post had the quality of someone taking stock, trying to separate her actual identity from the character she had created and sustained for years.

She often referred to herself as a Conceptual artist. Her website stated:
@jerrygogosian serves as a piercing satirical lens on the art world, navigating the complex tapestry of elitism and exclusivity that defines the industry. Through a blend of sharp wit and incisive commentary, this Instagram account exposes the often opaque mechanisms of asymmetric information, high barriers to entry, and the performative social rituals that gatekeep the most exclusive art circles. With a critical eye on the commodification of art and the performative activism rampant in the sphere, @jerrygogosian mocks the use of social capital for personal gain, highlighting how art is wielded as a tool for social positioning rather than genuine appreciation. The account takes aim at contemporary cultural trends, like influencer culture and the pursuit of online validation, employing humour and irony to critique personal behaviours and societal norms. Through specific references and satirical points, it offers a candid look at the strategic games of art collecting, the superficialities of gallery culture, and the absurdities of professional and personal dynamics within the art world, making it a must-follow for those looking for an unfiltered view behind the velvet rope of the art industry.

The circumstances of her death remain under investigation.
