In the 42nd week of Fig-2 at the ICA Studio, Artlyst visited the latest exhibition by Scottish artist Bruce McLean, currently inhabiting the premises, engaging in a continuous interview with himself throughout the week. Artlyst thought we would join in, and interview the artist as well! Artlyst Editor Paul Carter Robinson discusses how McLean revisits his keynote lecture at Frieze Art Fair last year, and how the artist has produced a film to document the dialogue, which will be perfected and re-shot through several takes and repetitions, assisted by his long-term friend and collaborator Eddie Farrell.

The work is charged with humour and wit, and the interview is formed of questions that seek to elaborate the artist’s position, and McLean’s approach to modes of production. Employing satirical, yet engaging commentaries on the state of arts and its relations, the artist brings forward references to his earlier works. In addition to the staging of McLean interviews McLean, the exhibition includes archival material from his previous exhibitions and artworks, as the artist discusses his sprawling career and some of the art world’s conceptual greats.
