The Venice Biennale is one of the art world’s most significant recurring exhibitions. Now in its 60th edition, titled ‘Foreigners Everywhere’ Artlyst can reveal the roster of artists and collectives set to participate in the upcoming event, held from April 20 to November 24. The announcement came during a press conference in Venice, yesterday, introducing a diverse lineup of 331 creators.
This year’s Biennale boasts a substantial increase in featured artists compared to its 2022 counterpart, which included 213 participants. Spearheaded by Pedrosa, the Biennale’s first Latin American curator, the selection emphasises geographic diversity, focusing on Indigenous artists and talents from the Global South.
In a significant transition, outgoing president Roberto Cicutto officially handed over the reins to Pietrangelo Buttafuoco.
Buttafuoco’s appointment, controversially nominated by Italy’s culture minister Gennaro Sangiuliano, concludes Cicutto’s presidency after just one term, amid a possible tenure of three.
The core theme of the leading exhibition, curated by Pedrosa, revolves around migration and decolonisation, addressing the complexities of human movement across borders and territories. They are titled “Stranieri Ovunque – Foreigners Everywhere,” the show delves into the experiences of living on the margins as outsiders or émigrés.
Among the 331 selected artists and collectives, the exhibition prioritises those who have never previously participated in the International Exhibition. While some may have showcased their works in national pavilions or collateral events, the emphasis remains on fresh voices and perspectives.
The Biennale, set to unfold in the Central Pavilion in the Giardini and the Arsenale, will feature two distinct sections: the Nucleo Contemporaneo and the Nucleo Storico, dedicated to global modernisms and modernisms in the Global South. Outdoor projects and a performance program during the preview and closing weekends will also receive special attention.
Scheduled to open to the public from April 20 to November 24, with a preview on April 17–19, the 60th Venice Biennale promises an immersive experience into the diverse realms of contemporary artistry. Among the participating artists are emerging talents and established figures, including luminaries like Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera, Carmen Herrera, and Yinka Shonibare.
