8. Christmas Tree – Michael Landy
An anti-Christmas stance was taken by British artist Michael Landy. Between 1988 and 2010 the Millbank gallery invited a series of cutting edge artists to decorate or re-imagine the traditional Christmas tree. In 1997, Landy installed a skip filled with empty bottles, drink cans, torn wrapping paper, broken decorations, the packaging from toys along with a dead Christmas tree. Very cheery! Proof that contemporary art doesn’t ‘do’ Christmas!
