1. Michael Jackson And Bubbles By Jeff Koons
The life-sized porcelain sculpture depicts Michael Jackson leaning back on a flower bed. On the late pop icon’s lap reclines his domesticated chimpanzee Bubbles who clasps a white cloth. They wear similar clothing, are coloured homogeneously, and parts of their bodies are paralleled with each other, such as Jackson’s right hand and Bubble’s paw. Koons overemphasised the King of Pop’s iconic manner paralleling him with Christian icons. Artlyst isn’t sure if it gets any more Kitsch than this. If Vladimir Tretchikoff was labelled ‘the king of kitsch’, then Jeff Koons should be given the accolade of ‘the intentional king of kitsch’ – which is why the artist resides among roses, love-hearts, balloon dogs, and general gaudiness – at number one on Artlyst’s list of The Top Ten Kitsch Works Of Art.
