5. Andy Warhol – Green Car Crash (Green Burning Car I) 1963
Forget the violence depicted in classical painting, Green Car Crash (Green Burning Car I) is one of the nasty works of Pop Culture, and is part of the Death and Disaster series created by Andy Warhol in 1963. Green Car Crash is one of the highly valued paintings of this collection. It was inspired by some photographs taken by John Whitehead and published in the Newsweek magazine. The car was pursued by the Seattle police. The driver lost control of the wheel at 60 miles per hour, crashing into a utility pole, the victim left hanging from it as the car burns – and Warhol repeats the scene in his usual eponymous fashion.
