A noteworthy Banksy mural, emerging in the aftermath of the controversial Brexit vote in the UK, met its demise as the building hosting the artwork in Dover was brought down. The mural, valued at approximately £1.4 million, surfaced in 2017, a year following Britain’s decision to leave the European Union.
The artwork was painted on the side of the Castle Amusements building in Dover, portraying a labourer chiselling away at one of the 12 yellow stars on the blue EU flag. This symbolic representation served as a striking commentary on the repercussions of Brexit and quickly became a tourist landmark in the coastal town.
In 2019, the mural vanished overnight, whitewashed without warning, and bewildered locals and visitors alike. Despite efforts to potentially restore the piece, the recent demolition marked the end of this culturally significant work.
The new development, “The Bench,” encompasses cultural and community engagement spaces and residential units, forming part of a broader regeneration initiative. Dover City Council justified the mural’s demolition, citing significant conservation costs and technical challenges. The spokesperson stated that preserving the Banksy artwork would impose a considerable financial burden on local taxpayers.
While the mural was whitewashed in 2019, attempts were made to conserve parts of the artwork beneath the layers of paint. DDS Demolition, responsible for the building’s demolition, is now exploring options for salvaging the Banksy piece. Stars and sections of the labourer with a ladder have been successfully removed intact.
Although there is uncertainty about the potential conservation due to the extensive whitewashing and the poor condition of the render, DDS Demolition is covering all additional costs. If successful, the salvaged pieces will be considered the property of the demolition company.
A spokesperson for DDS Demolition assured that efforts were underway to assess the retrieved portions of the mural, emphasizing their commitment to preserving the artwork for the community’s enjoyment. Banksy, known for his elusive identity, has not publicly commented on the demolition, maintaining the mystery that shrouds the renowned street artist.
Banksy’s ability to provoke thought and challenge norms through public art has rendered his works both culturally significant and complex to preserve, often inviting potential theft or defacement despite the escalating market value of his creations.
