Banksy Unveils New Painting Honouring George Floyd’s Memory

Banksy George Floyd

Banksy George Floyd Painting: The elusive Street Artist Banksy has unveiled a new artwork inspired by the murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis. The artist stated; “People of colour are being failed by the system”.

A photo of the work was posted to his Instagram on Saturday, writing: “At first I thought I should just shut up and listen to black people about this issue. But why would I do that? It’s not their problem. It’s mine.”

The artwork appeared as hundreds of people gathered in Parliament Square in London to protest against the death of Mr Floyd in the US on May 25.

George Floyd died after a white police officer held him down by pressing his knee into his neck. His death has sparked days of protests around the world.

Banksy added “Like a broken pipe flooding the apartment of the people living downstairs. This faulty system is making their life a misery, but it’s not their job to fix it. They can’t – no-one will let them in the apartment upstairs. “This is a white problem and if white problem don’t fix it, someone will have to come upstairs and kick the door in.”

Banksy’s new painting depicts a vigil candle burning an American flag. The use of white lilies is perhaps a reference to death and resurrection. There are also some spooky figures in the peeling paint. On the right-hand side there is a ghostly looking policeman and on the left various sculls.

Anti-racism protests have been planned across the UK this weekend in the wake of the death of Mr Floyd. However, Government ministers have urged people to avoid mass gatherings and practice social distancing because of the Covid19 pandemic. Ten thousand people attended the demonstration today, and another is planned for Banksy’s hometown of Bristol tomorrow.

Banksy is an anonymous graffiti artist from Bristol, who uses subversive epigrams and dark humour to provide political and social commentary on streets, walls, and bridges of cities throughout the world. Banksy’s work grew out of the Bristol underground scene, which involved collaborations between artists and musicians. Banksy authentication and artist enquiries or reports of stolen work should be directed to Pest Control. The latest work has appeared on the official Banksy Instagram account, the latest confirmation of an authentic Banksy.
