Deptford X is

Deptford X is a London arts festival not to be missed. It takes place from this weekend till 6 October and was created to promote the best contemporary visual art and celebrate that art with the widest possible audience. It is an arts event born of Deptford’s creative community and based on a belief in the limitless potential of the area. Deptford X is London’s longest running contemporary visual arts festival and has been experienced by over one million people since inception in 1998. The festival brings together some of the best artists from around the globe to Deptford, south-east London and mixes them with some of the most creative talent living in the area.

This year, Deptford X has announced that Bob & Roberta Smith is the Lead Artist for Deptford X 2013. Bob & Roberta Smith has issued Deptford X with the rallying cry: ART MAKES PEOPLE POWERFUL!
Creativity feeds off restriction. Even in times of austerity, art is the voice of the people to persuade, to protest, to empower. We are all in this together – Art makes people powerful!

Deptford X,  the arts event born of Deptford’s creative community, has  attracted over one million visitors to date, and has seen some of the greatest artists from around the globe working together with the unique pool of creative talent in Deptford and south east London.

Highlights of the festival include new work by Bob & Roberta Smith, in addition to work by Associate Artists Dan Holliday and Bernadette Russell.  Deptford X will be presenting two group exhibitions and showcasing an extensive Fringe programme throughout festival.  It will also launch a unique, large scale event with a cast in excess of 100 collaborators.

“The greatest show on earth could have just found the greatest sideshow. Deptford X is timing this year’s festival to coincide with the hoopla on all sides in the host boroughs of London 2012.” Culture 24

With galleries like LUBOMIROV-EASTON, APT, BEARSPACE, Hatch Space, Core Gallery, Utrophia, the Old Police Station and The Agency – as well as a host of artists’ studios – Deptford has one of the most thriving art scenes in the capital – something proved year after year by Deptford X.
