Frieze has announced the cancellation of the ninth edition of the Frieze New York art fair. It falls in line with health and safety guidelines regarding the spread of the coronavirus (COVID19) with restrictions on gatherings of more than 50 people.
The Frieze directors have promised that exhibitors would be refunded
In light of global health concerns regarding COVID-19 and following advice and restrictions from local, national, international and health authorities, we regret to announce the cancellation of Frieze New York 2020. We are grateful to everyone who has worked so hard in preparation for this year’s fair and thank all our participating galleries, curators, partners, staff, and the New York community for their unwavering support. We have also postponed Frieze Sculpture at Rockefeller Center, which will now open in the summer of 2020. We will update everyone with further information in the coming weeks. We look forward to Frieze New York in 2021. If you purchased tickets for Frieze New York, we will be in touch about refunds, for any further questions, please contact us.
The Frieze directors have promised that exhibitors will be refunded, with details to be relayed soon. In a week that saw most museums, galleries, and fairs close in the US, cancelling upcoming major events like Frieze NY comes as no surprise. Nearly 200,000 people globally have contracted the virus with more than 8,000 deaths, sending the stock markets tumbling and people wary of leaving home.
The last few months have seen the postponement of Art Basel Hong Kong, Art Cologne, and Art Brussels. Art Basel Switzerland will also likely be postponed or moved to an Autumn slot.
Taking place on Randall’s Island Park, the fair features presentations from top international contemporary and 20th-century art galleries, curated sections showcasing emerging artists, site-specific artist commissions, talks and series. Frieze New York brings together more than 200 leading galleries from 31 countries, showcasing ambitious presentations and new commissions by today’s most significant international artists from emerging talents to seminal and rediscovered 20th-century masters.
Presenting museum-quality exhibitions in a bespoke, light-filled structure designed for the experience of art, Frieze New York offers an immersive cultural experience for major institutional and private collectors, scholars and art enthusiasts alike. With galleries joining from six continents, including exhibitors from Brazil, Guatemala, Japan and Poland, the fair illuminates the aesthetic, political and historical concerns driving contemporary practice around the world.
Frieze New York is distinguished from the other international art fairs through innovative and rigorous programming, and focused high-quality gallery presentations that act as extensions of gallery exhibitions (either through one-, two-, or three-person presentations or themed group shows). Frieze New York offers the opportunity to encounter an exceptional quality and range of artwork, featuring the world’s most exciting emerging talents together with iconic names in modern and contemporary art. Independent curators have specially advised on sections Frame, Diálogos and Spotlight to encourage discovery and connoisseurship. Visitors can also experience a dynamic series of talks, new artist commissions and the city’s most talked-about restaurants – all in a bespoke structure, designed for the experience of art and overlooking the East River in Randall’s Island Park.
