Gerhard Richter Pledges Art To Charity Auction for The Homeless

Over 100 artworks have been donated to a charity sale to benefit the Düsseldorf charity for the homeless fiftyfifty by more than 70 renowned German artists. The artists that have pledged to participate in the charitable event include Gerhard Richter, Imi Knoebel, Katharina Fritsch, Candida Höfer, Thomas Ruff, Thomas Struth, and Thomas Schütte.

The charity auction also includes donations from young and emerging artists originating from Germany’s Rhineland region. The charity will host an exhibition to accompany the sale to be curated by the nearby Museum Kunstpalast. The works will be displayed from 3 November to 16 December at Eon’s Düsseldorf headquarters, according to a joint statement by the energy giant Eon and fiftyfifty.

The charity organisation expects to raise “several hundred thousand Euros”, Westdeutsche Zeitung reports. The proceeds of the charity auction will go towards the purchase of apartments for temporarily housing for the homeless. High-profile writers such as Günther Grass have also contributed to the charity’s magazine.

Fiftyfifty was founded in 1999, and was created with the goal of reducing the number of people forced to live on the streets of the affluent city of Düsseldorf, Germany. The organisation started a magazine which included writings by important literary figures such as Nobel Prize winner Günter Grass. The charity operates a gallery which is selling original signed and numbered prints that have been donated by the international art stars.
