Important Warhol Collection Goes Under The Hammer

Ex Brigitte Bardot Husband’s estate to be sold in May

London,The art collection of the late playboy art dealer Gunter Sach, husband of Brigitte Bardot and friend of the artist Andy Warhol will be sold at Sotheby’s London in an auction in May. The sale contains over 300 items, ranging from iconic Pop Art works to a vast collection of Art Deco furniture. The sale will be offered on May 22-23 and is expected to raise more than 20 million pounds ($31 million),Sotheby’s New York said in a statement today. A 1959 photograph of Brigitte Bardot by Richard Avedon, Numbered 6 from an edition of 35 will be included in the Sotheby’s auction. The sale will also include the Andy Warhol silkscreen painting based on the Avedon work. Bardot, commissioned by Sachs, was taken from the 1959 Avedon picture of the French actress and photo-silkscreened onto canvas by Warhol. One of the 35 original silver prints of the image is included in the sale, priced at 40,000 pounds to 60,000 pounds.The story goes that, Sachs organized an exhibition for the artist at his own gallery in Hamburg in 1972. As none of the works sold on the opening night, Sachs bought half the show to save his friend’s embarrassment. Also on sale is Warhol’s 1986 pink “Fright Wig,” one of the artist’s last self-portraits, is valued at 2 million pounds to 3 million pounds. The sale also is offering a complete set of Allen Jones mannequin furniture from 1969. Comprising a chair, table and hat stand, these are valued at 30,000 pounds to 40,000 pounds each. Warhol’s “Flowers,” dating from 1964-65 is estimated at 3 million pounds to 4 million pounds. Sachs committed suicide in a similar manner to his father,at his chalet in Gstaad, Switzerland, at the age of 78, in May 2011.
