Jonathan Ive Upgrades His CBE To Knighthood

Apple’s industrial designer knighted in New Year’s honours list

The Designer Jonathan Ive has been knighted in the 2011 New Years honours list. He may now take the style Sir Jonathan as a Knight Commander of the British Empire (KBE). He described the honour as “absolutely thrilling” and said he was “both humbled and sincerely grateful”. Mr Ive added: “I am keenly aware that I benefit from a wonderful tradition in the UK of designing and making. “I discovered at an early age that all I’ve ever wanted to do is design.” The 44 year old is best known as chief designer for Apple and the man behind the brand’s sleek aspirational designs. Ive became the leader of Apple’s design team in 1996 and has since then transformed the company’s design philosophy.

Born in Chingford, Essex near London in 1967, Ive attended Newcastle Polytechnic Newcastle-on-Tyne in the 1980’s. In the 90s, he established the quirky design group Tangerine and worked as a consultant for Apple, before moving to San Francisco with his writer wife Heather to work for the company full time in 1992.  At Apple he was the man behind many of the iconic gadgets of the last 15 years including the iMac, iPod, iPhone and iPad. He joined Apple in 1992 and has been based in California ever since. Steve Jobs, who returned to Apple in 1996, after his 12 year exile, appointed Ive to his current position in 1997.

According to Ive, Jobs would attempt to take credit for some of his ideas from time-to-time. ”I pay maniacal attention to where an idea comes from, and I even keep notebooks filled with my ideas,” Ive said. “I am keenly aware that I benefit from a wonderful tradition in the UK of designing and making,” He said in a statement. “To be recognized with this honour in the UK, is more important to me then anyone will ever know” I discovered at an early age that all I’ve ever wanted to do is design. I feel enormously fortunate that I continue to be able to design and make products with a truly remarkable group of people here at Apple.”

The knighthood is the second time Mr Ive has been recognised in the honour’s list. In 2005 he was made a Commander of the British Empire (CBE). A report from early 2011 claimed that Apple co-founder Steve Jobs was in the final stages of receiving knighthood from the last government, but his honor was blocked at the last minute by Former Prime Minister Gordon Brown over Jobs refusal to speak at an event.
