King’s First Birthday Honours List Overlooks Visual Artists

Hew Lock King's Birthday Honours List

Novelists Martin Amis, Ian McEwan and Fashion Editor Anna Wintour were honoured in the King’s birthday list, but where were the Visual Artists and Art Professionals? This was undoubtedly one of the biggest snubs to our industry in decades. Here is the spartan list of the few deserving that were acknowledged: Deborah Swallow departing Märit Rausing Director of Courtauld Institute of Art, Nick Knight photographer, Anthony Eyton painter, Hew Locke, artist (OBE), Joe Scotland Director of Studio Voltaire and Susan Giles, Senior Curator Bristol Museums.

The Kings’ Honours list, also known as the Birthday Honours, is a list of individuals recognised for their outstanding achievements, service, or contributions to the United Kingdom. The list is released twice yearly, on New Year’s Day and the King’s official birthday in June. The Birthday list is a special edition of the honours list released annually to mark the official birthday of the British monarch. This is the first round of honours presented by King Charles III.

Although King Charles III was born on the 14th of November, his official birthday is celebrated in the United Kingdom on a designated Saturday in June.

The British monarch awards the honours on the Prime Minister’s and various committees’ advice. The honours recognise individuals from different walks of life, including public figures, politicians, scientists, artists, athletes, and community leaders.

Different honours categories include Knighthoods, Damehoods, orders, decorations, and medals. The highest honours include the Order of the British Empire (OBE), the Order of Merit (OM), and the Order of the Bath (CB), among others. Recipients may be awarded different ranks within these orders, such as Commander (CBE), Officer (OBE), or Member (MBE).

The King’s Honours list is an important tradition in the United Kingdom. It serves as a way to recognise and celebrate the contributions and accomplishments of individuals who have made a positive difference in their communities and society as a whole.
