Visual Art is not the type of thing that you really expect to find at a Hollywood event, a few statues maybe – but not the kind that you may find in The Museum of Modern Art – but this year, the Art of Elysium, a charity organisation that brings art to children battling medical conditions, held a star-studded Golden Globes pre-party on January 10 that changed that balance, award-show stereotypes were no more.
Marina Abramović teamed up with Costume National on an evening of experiential art works inspired by the notion of “heaven.” the evenings guests wore silk robes and were invited to hang out in beds with tray tables as opposed to the traditionally numbered tables. Sound familiar? Abramović staged a similar bed performance piece this year at Art Basel in Miami Beach – if not with quite thae same level of glitterati.
“Abramović told Style.com “Usually these parties are always boring, always the same, [I had] this idea to try to come at it from a different way, [with everyone] dressed in pajamas or in beds, so that everyone is equal. There are so many ways of entertaining, [but] I am proposing in my way as an artist the possibility of entertaining that’s never been used before.”
This evening of alternative art performances took place at Hangar 8 inside the Santa Monica Airport, and included a “silent disco” courtesy of Samsung, there was also a fashion show with clothes from Costume National’s pre-fall 2015 collection, and a 3-D film and performance by musician-turned-artist Moby.
The list of celebrity guests who were invited to enjoy the alternative art event included the likes of Johnny Depp, Amber Heard, Usher, Tobey Maguire, Joaquin Phoenix, Zach Braff, Cara Delevingne, and Laura Prepon. Hopefully the self-conscious image-aware actors enjoys the bed performance in a relaxed fashion.
Apparently many of the celebrities had a difficult time remaining quiet during the silent disco, and other events – and had to be admonished by Abramović. We hope only jokingly, but this has not been confirmed – The LA Times reports.
