A new group show at the Baltic, which opened on 25 April, explores the enduring presence of the moon and the rich iconography of space on the popular imagination of artists. With reworked stories and imagined realities, ideas and tropes from science fiction, mixed with conspiracy theories and an interest in fictional restaging, the exhibition illustrates differing global perspectives of the moon and reworks its prevailing image on our collective imagination.
They Used to Call it the Moon brings together artists from Pakistan, Croatia and the UK working in film, photography, sculpture and collage. BALTIC 39 will also provide a platform for ideas and discussion where scientists, environmentalists, astronomers, artists and writers will share their knowledge and experiences in relation to the future possibilities of the moon.
Artists include: Caroline Corbasson / Katy Cole / Aaron Guy / Mishka Henner / Thomas Ireland / Hefin Jones / Kate Liston / Cristina de Middel / Aleksandra Mir / Michael Mulvihill / Liam Murray / Mehreen Murtaza / Katie Paterson / Joseph Popper / Elizabeth Price / Sophy Rickett / Antonio Riello / Aura Satz / Shimabuku / Marko Tadić
BALTIC has programmed a series of associated events to accompany this exhibition including film screenings, discussion, performance and a stargazing trip to Kielder Observatory.
