Mona Hatoum (b. 1952) is the fifth artist to receive the prestigious annual Art Icon award at the Whitechapel Gallery. The Art Icon 2018 award will be presented on Monday 29 January 2018.

A painting by Sir Stanley Spencer titled Cookham from Englefield, that was stolen five years ago from the Stanley Spencer Gallery in Berkshire has been uncovered in a raid on a drug dealer’s home in Kingston- Upon-Thames. The work of art valued at over £1m has now been returned to the gallery, police have revealed.

Update Thursday 19 October: Pyotr Pavlensky and his partner Oksana Shalygina have been detained, and placed in pre-trial detention in Paris following Monday’s Performance Art arson attack on a branch of the Bank of France. Pavlensky had been initially admitted to a police psychiatric unit, but a judge decided on Wednesday the pair should be placed in a pre-trial holding facility..

London: An auction held at Sotheby’s in aid of survivors of the Grenfell Tower fire has raised £1.9m. Thirty one lots donated by artists including Anish Kapoor, Wolfgang Tilmans Antony Gormley and Tracey Emin sold over the estimates set by the auctioneers.

A long-lost marble bust by Auguste Rodin depicting Napoleon Bonaparte, has turned up in a municipal building in Madison, New Jersey. The major work by the French sculptor was last seen in an exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum in New York in the 1920s.
