Vanya Balogh in association with Cross Lane Projects has announced the winner of the Miniscule Venice Awards 2019 from the 183 works exhibited in the Miniscule Part 2 exhibition during the 58th Venice Biennale.
Out of 37 nominations in total, the winner eventually emerged amongst the selection. Erotica was the order of the day with the outstanding work of the exhibition awarded to NERYS MATHIAS for her work: EYE, EYE 2019. The Runners Up were Mark Woods for Angel 2019 and Christopher Clack for Artist Penis 2019
The judges were made up of an international panel of artists, curators, gallerists and art writers including Joanne Shurvell / FORBES.COM, London; Luca Berta & Francesca Giubilei / VENICE ART FACTORY, Venice; Vera Pilpoul / Independent Art Curator, Tel Aviv;Edoardo Cimadori / VAP, Venice; Laura Cornejo / Art historian, writer and independent curator, Barcelona; Laura Omacini, Marta Naturale & Chiara Enzo / Venice Art Academy, Venice; Sara Faith & Paul Carter Robinson / ARTLYST International, London.
Miniscule Venice could be regarded as a bijou sociological experiment: over 100 international artists have taken up the invitation to create and exhibit a diminutive art object of any genre or media, but with a simple proviso: maximum size of the work is that of a common matchbox. This diverse exhibition, curated and devised by artist Vanya Balogh presents a set of carefully considered, imaginative but seriously tiny, fragile artworks – an exquisite mass of breeding minisculism, making it by far a biggest smallest show at the 58th Venice Biennale. Here we will find a toy-box destruction derby of a high concept in abject competition, a kaleidoscope cross-cut of current making and thinking but one set in an equal arena, although admittedly it may be biased towards the “less is more” camp.
The variety of subjects, techniques and materials used results in a set of ingenious, tiny, fragile artworks. Most of the works are handmade often with the aid of a magnifying glass. The works are displayed either on two shelves the length of the small gallery space or on the walls with enough space around each work to separate one from another. Most pieces are for sale.
Due to its popularity, over 5,000 visitors to date, the exhibition at Fondamenta Sant’Anna 996, Castello 30122, Venezia has been extended until 31 July 2019. Open daily Wed-Sun 11am-6pm.
Miniscule Part 2 is a sequel to the exhibition Miniscule curated and devised by artists Vanya Balogh and Jim Racine, and presented at Oblong Gallery, London in June 2010.
A companion exhibition featuring over 220 artists, including ten artists based in Cumbria, was held at Cross Lane Projects, Kendal, Cumbria in the spring of 2019.
