The Vauxhall Art Car Boot Fair 2013 got off to an engine roaring start at midday, Sunday 9th June. Now in its 10th year it featured work by over 70 renowned artists including Sir Peter Blake, Gavin Turk, Emin International, Polly Morgan, Mat Collishaw, Bob & Roberta Smith, Pam Hogg, Pure Evil and Marcus Harvey who was selling copies of his Margaret Thatcher print. Many of the artists pitched up to stalls to personally sell their original and limited edition works of art at bargain prices. Tracey Emin had her crew selling small folios of six prints for £50, all were signed, dated and stamped by the artist, so said the stall holders. The Peter Blake print which depicted several vintage Vauxhall cars sold out in 15 minutes, leaving many empty handed.
The Art Car Boot Fair has become a traditional part of the June art calendar. It is famous for being the day the art world lets its hair down, coming together to fill the car park with English eccentricity, quirky ideas, incredible bargains, cool art, eclectic wares and mad performances. Pop stars mingle with fashion designers and actresses rub shoulders with Royalty as they all check out the art, hang out at the bar and muck in with all the entertainment, of which there is plenty. It’s an art-buying frenzy from the moment the doors open to the thousand plus queue, some of which has camped overnight, for the chance to grab the special just-for-the-day artworks. There’s something for every pocket with works typically on sale for between £10 to £1,000.
