JMW Turner: Narrating A Modern World – Tate Britain – Edward Lucie-Smith

There can be no doubt that the new show devoted to Turner at Tate Britain is a meaty affair. The gallery is fortunate in the fact that a great deal of Turner’s legacy is in its own possession, and that other British galleries also own important examples of his work. In present circumstances, with the coronavirus still raging, this will have saved the organisers a great deal of trouble.

Sir Hans Sloane British Museum Founder Relegated To History

The founder of the British Museum Sir Hans Sloane has had his bust removed from a prominent position in the gallery due to his connection to the slave trade. The statue, currently in a cupboard, will now make up part of a display which acknowledges colonial oppression.

Turner Prize Bursaries 10 Artists Revealed

Tate Britain has announced the ten artists who will each receive one-off £10,000 bursaries in place of this year’s Turner Prize: Arika, Liz Johnson Artur, Oreet Ashery, Shawanda Corbett, Jamie Crewe, Sean Edwards, Sidsel Meineche Hansen, Ima-Abasi Okon, Imran Perretta and Alberta Whittle.

Fugitive Artists Display Powerful Images At Turner Contemporary

‘We Will Walk—Art and Resistance in the American South’ is one of the most powerful and important shows I’ve seen. It is co-curated by the artist Hannah Collins, who initiated the project, and curator Paul Goodwin. The exhibition traces the history of African-American artists in the Deep South during the second half of the 20th century, a time of racial terror so savage, so traumatic but yet so recent.
