2. 9/11 Attacks: Destroyed Art And A Missing Rodin – 2001

The Rodin was a cast of his iconic Thinker that belonged to the Cantor Fitzgerald brokerage firm, which lost 650 employees in the attacks. Amazingly, the work actually survived the destruction “before mysteriously disappearing again.” Other reports indicate that the piece may in fact have been stolen from ground zero after its recovery. Further artworks destroyed in the September 11 attacks in the United States included a painted wood relief by Louise Nevelson, a painting from Roy Lichtenstein’s Entablature series and a Joan Miró tapestry. The total value of artwork lost in the September 11 attacks is said to have been in excess of $100 million.
