The London Art Fair 2019 (LAF) returns to the capital from 16-20 January to obliterate the winter blues and give us a boost of vitamin D. The fair will open the 2019 international art calendar. Connecting the best galleries from around the world with both seasoned and aspiring collectors, London Art Fair provides a unique opportunity to discover and champion exceptional modern and contemporary art from the 20th century to the present day.
Sitting alongside the main fair, London Art Fair 2019 provides expert insights into innovative curatorial concepts in contemporary art through its critically-acclaimed curated sections: Art Projects, offering a platform for the next generation of artists and gallerists, and Photo50, showcasing current trends in contemporary photographic practice. In addition, the London Art Fair continues to champion and support regional museums through its annual Museum Partnership, which this year invites Eastbourne’s Towner Art Gallery to showcase its extraordinary evolving collection at the Fair.
2019 EXHIBITORS London Art Fair 2019
This year will see the participation of over 100 galleries from around the world, with new international exhibitors AN INC. (South Korea), Galerie BAYART (France), Gallery G-77 (Japan), Gallery Tableau (South Korea), Hazelton Fine Art Galleries (Canada), REM Project (Puerto Rico) and Víctor Lope Arte Contemporáneo (Spain) joining new UK-based exhibitors exhibitors ARTHILL GALLERY , Emanuel von Baeyer , Encounter Contemporary , Messum’s , Patrick Heide Contemporary Art , RAW Editions , Vigo Gallery and Zuleika Gallery .
The London Art Fair 2019 will feature work by some of the world’s most renowned living artists working across a variety of media, including David Hockney, Banksy and Grayson Perry. Venet-Haus Gallery will bring fresh works by Van Ray and The Connor Brothers, while Danielle Arnaud Gallery ’s stand will feature the work of five women artists: Nicky Coutts, Oona Grimes, Helen Maurer, Annie Wiles and Sarah Woodfine, with an exquisite new glass work from Maurer’s ‘Corner Shelves’ series. JGM Gallery has developed an exhibition bringing together contemporary Indigenous Australian artists and contemporary Western artists with a shared interest in abstraction and mark making, while Stephen Farthing’s ‘The Miracle Paintings’ will come to market for the first time at Candida Stevens Gallery following their recent exhibition at Salisbury Cathedral.
There will be a strong prints focus in 2019 with new works and exclusive releases from print studio JEALOUS from the likes of David Shrigley, the Chapman Brothers and Charming Baker. Returning to the Fair this year, Flowers Gallery will showcase original prints by a selection of their artists, juxtaposing abstract works by Michael Kidner and Carol Robertson with figurative works by Tom Hammick, Ken Currie and Freya Payne. Emanuel von Baeyer will offer prints by the likes of Lucian Freud and Richard Long.
Those with a taste for 20th-century art will be well catered for with an exclusive preview of the exhibition ‘Thinking Italian’, opening at Gilden’s Art Gallery in January 2019, featuring works by important Italian artists such as Lucio Fontana, Gino Severini, and Umberto Boccioni. Hazelton Fine Art Galleries will bring a selection of Salvador Dali bronze sculptures to their stand, marking the 30th anniversary of the artist’s death in 2019.
As always, there will be a strong representation of Modern British art at the fair thanks to the participation of many of the UK’s leading specialists. Highlights include Christopher Kingzett Fine Art ’s exhibition of works on paper by Graham Sutherland, including a rare study for his famous portrait of Churchill, and a celebration of Modern British painting and sculpture by some of the most celebrated British artists of the twentieth century at Crane Kalman Gallery including Graham Sutherland, Ben Nicholson, Sir Anthony Caro and Henry Moore.
Sculpture will take centre stage at Galerie BAYART with works by the great European sculptors Igor Mitoraj, Christophe Charbonnel and Patrick Villas, and at Galerie Calderone, who will showcase their most promising emerging talent, young Spanish sculptor César Orrico, alongside a unique 1947 masterpiece by British painter Michael Ayrton. Encounter Contemporary will be bringing a selection of Gerry Judah’s extremely intricate wooden sculptures, including new works from his ‘Bengali’ series, and monumental outdoor sculpture by Charles Hadcock meeting visitors at the entrance to the fair.
‘Europe 2019’, a new work at TAG Fine Arts by British-Bulgarian artist Yanko Tihov, which represents Europe’s national borders through passport covers and references the post-Brexit British passport, is just one of the many examples of art engaging with contemporary politics and current affairs. Meanwhile, Candida Stevens Gallery will be showing previously unseen work by pioneering textile artist Alice Kettle, whose current exhibition at Whitworth Art Gallery engages with migrants and their creativity within the context of the global refugee crisis.
CURATED SECTIONS London Art Fair 2019
Working in collaboration with leading international curators, London Art Fair 2019 has continued to evolve to reflect the changes in contemporary practice and collecting within the art world, as presented in the critically-acclaimed Art Projects and Photo50.
Art Projects established in 2005 supports emerging galleries, returns for its 15th edition at the Fair to showcase the freshest contemporary art from across the globe, with over half of exhibitors coming from outside of the UK. Highlights will include a new body of work by London and Beijing-based painter Xiao-yang Li at narrative projects ahead of her first solo museum exhibition at Mexico’s Museo Leonora Carrington in January 2019 and an investigation into contemporary painting being made in the UK today by five women artists at New Art Projects.
Dialogues a significant feature of Art Projects, which invites pairs of
Galleries to create a shared presentation, encouraging innovative collaborations and new relationships. This year Dialogues is curated by Kiki Mazzucchelli, an independent curator and writer based in São Paulo and London. This year’s theme focuses on dialogues between the work of contemporary artists from Latin America and Europe, highlighting their shared interest in a wide variety of issues, including the subversion of Modernist canons and the advancement of female perspectives in painting.
Photo50 is the Fair’s annual guest-curated exhibition, providing a critical forum for examining some of the most distinctive elements of current photographic practice. Now in its 13th year, Photo50 will be curated by British curator, writer and editor, Tim Clark, Who’s looking at the family, now? Will engage with fundamental questions about family life, its changing dynamics and complexity, as represented by contemporary photographers from around the world. The exhibition will feature the work of fourteen artists such as the acclaimed British and Irish artists David Moore, Trish Morrissey and Léonie Hampton alongside artists on display for the first time in London, including Mexico City-based Mariela Sancari, Thai-born artist Alba Zari, Iranian artist Amak Mahmoodian and Lebohang Kganye from South Africa.
Towner Art Gallery is 2019’s annual Museum Partnership, the Fair continues to champion regional museums by showcasing their extraordinary collections in the UK capital. For the 2019 edition, London Art Fair has partnered with Eastbourne’s Towner Art Gallery to present The Living Collection, an exhibition that celebrates the gallery’s rich heritage of collecting, exhibiting and championing contemporary art for almost a century. Demonstrating the strength of the Towner Collection as an active, evolving body of contemporary art, the exhibition will feature modern and contemporary works of art by the likes of Eric Ravilious, Edward Bawden, John Nash, William Nicholson, Duncan Grant, William Gear, Gertrude Hermes, Tirzah Garwood, and Wolfgang Tillmans.
