Three London Shows November 2019 – Edward Lucie-Smith

As the nation plunges towards Brexit, and, as the official galleries – specifically the two big London Tates – grow more and more self-satisfied and increasingly inclined to offer displays of civic virtue as substitutes for anything you can actually describe as art, one turns towards the commercial galleries for solace.

From Botticelli to Tillmans. 160 of the world’s leading galleries at Frieze, 130 at Frieze Masters, over 1000 international artists. No sign of the Brexit-uncertainty and escalating political instability. No sign that Britain is in the midst of an economic and political crisis. Dealers did good business.

It’s time for the annual show of sculpture in Regent’s Park, organised by the Frieze Art Fair, but opening far in advance of the fair itself, and lasting for much longer. Also, it’s free. What’s on view, you see for nothing. Which makes me wish, quite fervently, that it was a more convincing show.

RA Summer Exhibition Returns To Form Under Jock McFadyen

This year the RA Summer Exhibition has returned to form with a talented lineup of artists chosen by an inexhaustible group of jurors. The 251st edition received over 16,000 entries. Around 1200 works, in a range of media, goes on display, next week. The majority of these artworks are offered for sale, allowing visitors to purchase original work by upcoming and established artists.
