Jeff Koons Biography ArtLyst
With selected works from his exhibition, Popeye Series: The Serpentine Gallery, London
Jeff Koons was born in Pennsylvania in 1955. He studied painting at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and the Maryland Institute College of Art. Koons worked as a commodities broker on Wall Street while establishing himself as an artist and it is said, that he is 75% broker and 25% artist. This has been part of the myth which has surrounded Koons for the last 25 years. He first gained recognition in the 1980s and subsequently set up a workshop producing finely crafted work in a Warolesque,factory-like studio. Jeff Koons is known for his vitrine displays of branded objects and his reproductions of banal paraphernalia such as balloon animals or over-sized domestic collectables. Jeff Koons' work has sold for record auction prices including at least one world record for a work by a living artist. Critics are sharply divided in their views of Koons. Some see his work as pioneering and of major art-historical importance. Others dismiss his work as crass and based on cynical self-merchandizing. Koons himself has stated that there are no hidden meanings in his works. Love it or hate it, Jeff Koons has had longevity in a disposable era of diverse 'Pop Culture'.
