Art Basel Paris ended its week, closing two days early. The possibility of rioting in the French capital forced galleries to shutter and pack up. International collectors and dealers had come to the city in droves, although the serious collectors had finished shopping during the midweek VIP days.
Business had been brisk. Major galleries reported sales in the millions of dollars. Paintings, sculptures, and works on paper all found buyers, across both modern and contemporary artists.
These figures have come from Art Basel itself. It published a selection of transactions on Sunday that exhibitors chose to report. That makes them a snapshot, not a full ledger. The fair cannot see private deals struck between galleries and their clients, and many sales never reach the public record. Still, the picture is clear enough. Established artists held their prices and drew serious money. Further down the scale, a broader group of contemporary artists also sold, at levels more within reach of ordinary collectors.
At the top of the market, White Cube reported two works by Julie Mehretu at $7.85 million each, while David Zwirner sold a painting by Gerhard Richter for $8.5 million. White Cube also placed a work by El Anatsui at $2 million and sold Tracey Emin’s You Were Part of Me (2022) for £990,000. The results put postwar and contemporary artists firmly at the centre of the fair’s reported business.
Blue-chip works hold the upper ground
Hauser & Wirth reported sales of approximately $10 million each for Gerhard Richter’s Rokokotisch (Rococo Table) (1965) and Georg Baselitz’s Der Hirte (The Shepherd) (1965). A work by Mark Bradford sold for $4 million, while George Condo’s Woman with Designer Shirt (2026) achieved $2.95 million. Lucio Fontana’s Concetto spaziale (1961) sold for €1.7 million.
Pace reported a price above $5 million for Jean Dubuffet’s La chaise (1964), alongside Lee Ufan’s From Line No. 79061 (1979) at $2 million and Beatriz Milhazes’s Onde Nascem os Girassóis I (2026) at $1.2 million. The gallery also sold a Richard Pousette-Dart painting for $650,000 and a charcoal drawing by Robert Longo, Untitled (Peony) (2026), for $600,000.
At David Zwirner, the Richter sale was followed by a Robert Ryman painting at $4 million and a Joan Mitchell painting at $3.8 million. Works by Marlene Dumas and Josef Albers each brought $3 million. Luc Tuymans reached $2.4 million, while an On Kawara painting sold for $2 million. Further transactions included a Ruth Asawa sculpture at $1.2 million and works by Albers, Elizabeth Peyton and Ryman in the $600,000 to $900,000 range.
The breadth of these results matters. Buyers were not concentrating exclusively on a single generation or movement. The reported sales ranged from postwar abstraction to figurative painting and contemporary sculpture, with established names continuing to underpin the higher end of the market.
Strong results for contemporary painting
Gladstone reported $1.5 million for Cecily Brown’s This Must Be the Place (2017–2021) and $1.3 million for Victor Man’s Pink Chair (2012). Elizabeth Peyton’s Tony (2000) sold for $350,000, while two watercolours by Wangechi Mutu each sold for $325,000. Jim Hodges reached $250,000 and Matthew Barney $225,000.
At Sprüth Magers, two paintings by George Condo, The Mechanical Man and Coney Island, both dated 2026, sold for $2.2 million each. A collaboration between Jenny Holzer and Lady Pink, IF YOU ARE CONSIDERED USELESS… (1983), achieved $450,000. Rosemarie Trockel’s Princeton (2016) sold for €220,000, and an untitled painting by Anne Imhof from 2026 brought €180,000.
White Cube’s results extended beyond Mehretu and Emin. Cai Guo-Qiang’s Bald Eagle (2023), made with gunpowder on canvas, sold for $700,000. Antony Gormley’s OPEN DOUBT II (2026) achieved £500,000, while a second Gormley sculpture, SMALL ADEPT (2025), sold for £250,000. Shao Fan’s Giant Lingzhi 0225 (2025) brought $360,000.
At Lisson Gallery, Anish Kapoor’s polished stainless steel works continued to attract buyers. Clear to Dark Brandy (2026) sold for £750,000 and Oriental Blue to Clear Satin (2026) for £700,000. Lee Ufan’s With Winds (1991) achieved $900,000, while Carmen Herrera’s Pavan #37 (1948) sold for $650,000.
European modernism remains in demand
Several sales demonstrated continued interest in European modern and postwar art. At Le Minotaure, a 1922 work on paper by Wassily Kandinsky sold for €2 million. Marie Vassilieff’s Port d’Espagne (1915) achieved €280,000, while a work by František Kupka from 1931 sold for €130,000.
Thaddaeus Ropac reported €1.8 million for Lucio Fontana’s Concetto spaziale (1953), made with synthetic paint and Murano glass fragments. Georg Baselitz’s Per mano – an der Hand (2019) sold for €800,000, and Marcel Duchamp’s L.H.O.O.Q. (1919–1964) achieved €650,000. Two paintings by Martha Jungwirth brought €520,000 and €460,000 respectively.
At Cardi Gallery, Jannis Kounellis’s Untitled (2010) sold for €350,000, matching the reported $350,000 sale of Louise Bourgeois’s marble House (1995). Two shaped canvases by Agostino Bonalumi each achieved €140,000, while an embossed work on paper by Enrico Castellani sold for €100,000.
The results suggest that collectors were willing to buy across a broad historical range, from early twentieth-century abstraction to the material experiments of the postwar period. The strongest prices were not confined to paintings. Sculpture and works on paper also featured prominently in the reported totals.
Sculpture and material-led work find buyers
Sculpture performed well across several stands. At Mennour, two examples of Ugo Rondinone’s The Angelic (2024) sold for $850,000 each. Lee Ufan’s Response (2026) achieved $1.05 million, while Fontana’s 1964 Concetto spaziale sold for €1.75 million.
At Xavier Hufkens, a bronze sculpture by Sherrie Levine sold for $300,000, a bench by Tatiana Trouvé for €275,000 and a mid-sized sculpture by Antony Gormley for $250,000. A plaster mask by Thomas Houseago brought $120,000. Tracey Emin’s small bronze sold for £50,000.
Karma reported $650,000 for Reggie Burrows Hodges’s Hutton Modesty Club: Son Runner (2025), and $450,000 for Richard Mayhew’s Southern Border (1999). A Manoucher Yektai painting from 1960 achieved $250,000, while Kathleen Ryan’s Bad Strawberry (Blossom) (2026) sold for $200,000.
At Georges-Philippe et Nathalie Vallois, Niki de Saint Phalle’s Cat Head Totem (2000) was reported in the range of $800,000 to $1.2 million. Duke Riley’s O’er the Wide and Plastic Sea (2023), made from reclaimed ocean plastic and seashells, sold for $150,000.
Emerging names and lower price points
The reported sales were not limited to trophy works. Galleries also placed younger artists and less established names at prices below €100,000, suggesting that the fair continued to offer collectors a range of entry points despite the strength of its headline transactions.
At Standard (Oslo), Suleman Aqeel Khilji recorded a notable sales volume. Mnemonic Spaces II (2025–2026) sold for €60,000 to an Australian museum collection. The Elevation (Bolan) (2024–2026) achieved €46,000, with a promised museum donation in the United States. Further works sold between €10,000 and €32,000 to private collections in Europe, Asia and the United States.
At Casey Kaplan, a work by Jordan Casteel sold for $300,000, while works by Amanda Williams and Hannah Levy sold for $110,000 and $60,000, respectively. Three works by Johanna Unzueta sold for $16,000 each. At Jessica Silverman, Loie Hollowell’s Yellow Brain on Soft Pink Shoulders achieved $450,000, while two historic works on paper by Judy Chicago sold for $125,000 and $85,000.
Other sales were considerably more modest. At Exo Exo, three paintings by Yann Stéphane Bisso were reported at €2,500-€3,000 each. Green Art Gallery sold three works by Asma Belhamar for $6,500 to $9,000, while Magnin-A reported €6,000 for a textile work by Jp MikaBilele.
These lower price points provide useful context for the headline sales. Art Basel Paris remains a market in which a small number of multimillion-dollar transactions sit alongside a much larger range of deals involving emerging artists, works on paper and editions.
A strong sales picture, with an important caveat
The reported transactions point to continued demand for established modern and contemporary artists, particularly at the upper end of the market. Richter, Mehretu, Condo, Fontana, Dubuffet and Kapoor all featured prominently, while galleries also reported significant sales of work by younger and mid-career artists.
But the figures should be read with care. They are dealer-reported sales, not independently audited results, and they represent only a portion of the fair’s activity. Prices quoted in different currencies also make direct comparisons difficult without conversion, and ranges supplied by galleries are not equivalent to confirmed single prices.
For the art market, the clearest signal is that demand at the top end remains concentrated in artists with established international followings. At the same time, sales at more accessible levels continue to provide a wider base of activity. The published results are encouraging, but they are not a full measure of the fair’s performance.
